Vincent Pule scored a late winner as Bidvest Wits secured the Telkom Knockout trophy with a 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in a tight final at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.
The match had looked as though it was headed for extra-time until Pule popped up with the winner in injury-time as he collected a cross from Amr Gamal and back-heeled the ball into the net.
It was just about deserved for Wits in a poor final that failed to live up to expectations, and secures a first trophy win in the competition for coach Gavin Hunt after almost 20 years of trying.
He has now secured the full set of domestic trophies, and for Wits it is a third win in South Africa's League Cup, to go with the MTN8 and league championship they won last season.
The match was devoid of clear-cut chances, with the best in the opening half falling to Gamal. Gabadinho Mhango, back from a six-match ban for spitting, was a constant threat with his pace, and his cross was deflected onto both posts, before Gamal failed to convert what looked a simple chance from the rebound.
Wits keeper Darren Keet made one fine save from Roggert Nyundu in the second half, while Ndumiso Mabena headed over with a decent chance, but Wits continued to set the tempo.
It looked as though the game was headed for extra-time until Pule popped up with the winner and allowed Hunt to take his place in history.
